History of our town in a nutshell.

Béla III. founded the settlement in 1183 when he settled French Cistercian monks, built monastery for them which was named after Saint Gotthard Bishop from Hilderheim. Miklós Széchy palatine, then the Zrínyis, Batthyánys built its fortification surrounded with a watery ditch. The monastery and also the fort were blown up by Austrian troops during the Bocskai revolt, after that the monk life came to an end.

Szentgotthárd battle against the Turkish in 1664 had a great influence not only on the political life of Hungary, but also of Europe. Montecuccoli imperial general fought a battle with Turkish marching towards Vienna under the command of Köprülü Ahmed chief leader on 1st August 1664. The critical moment of the seven-hour-battle was that many of runaway Turkish drowned into River Rába which flooded because of the heavy showers. Unfortunately in the Vasvár peace the advantage from the victory could not be used.

After having finished the railway line towards Graz in 1873 the industralization started in Szentgotthárd. Factories, plants were formed after each other ( Toy factory, Tobacco factory, Clock factory, Silk factory, Scythe factory ). Social changes came after the economic development: education, health institutions were established, civil organizations strengthened. By the end of the first decade in XX century Szentgotthárd had become a bustling town with the most full-developed industrial structure of the county. One of the prime movers of the development of Szentgotthárd was Kálmán Széll who supported the idea sas a representative of the region, later as a minister and prime minister. The golden age of the town was over after the Trianon peace contracts, which was followed by the First World War.

The big part of its attraction districts was moved abroad. Between the two world wars there was stagnation in the first decades of socialism there was
degredation in the settlement. Brightening up has started since 1980. On the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the monastery the settlement got a town status in 1983. The change of the regime meant the real change. The town could organize its relation system, which was cut off artificially for decades, more
freely.Szentgotthárd’s favourable geographical position and its exciting high-level industrial culture have attracted foreign investors. The town management has started a vast infrastructure and industry developing programme. Industrial Park extending over Szentgotthárd-Heiligenkreuz has been established which employs more than 3000 people. Local Authority has prepared the Thermal Park programme which will be a dominant developing direction in the next period. Szentgotthárd is before a historical opportunity again. After joining the EU it will get back its lost attraction, so it can take its possession in the Hungarian-Austrian-Slovenian three-border region.
