Take a virtual trip in our town.

Szentgotthárd can be reached on highway no.8 through Jakabháza and Rábafüzes. The two annexed settlements’ people German nationals traditionally promote their language and culture. One of the most public road cross-borders in Hungary to Austria is found in Rábafüzes.

Going towards the centre of Szentgotthárd we go over the bridge of flood controll system along Lahn stream which was built in the framework of a programme supported by the EU. According to our plans in the area of flood controll surrended in 2002 a Youth Park will be established. Going on institutions of Industrial Park extending over Szentgotthárd – Heiligenkreuz can be seen on both sides of the highway. Next to the public road there is a seperate cycling path and the interesting thing about itt hat it was built on the track line of the ex ’ironcurtain’.

Going over River Rába bridge we are almost in the centre of the town. On the left there is a milleneum monument called ’Kapu’ on which warnings of Saint Stephen have been graved.

The third biggest Baroque church in Hungary catches our eyes from far which is one of the symbols of our town. The Baroque church of the town and the cloister were built between 1748-64 by Franz Anton Pilgram architect from Vienna.
Its tower is 60.5 m. high. Szentgotthárd battle was represented by Jr. István Dorfmeister on the frescoes of the cupolas. Gáspár Schrezenmayer Cistercian monk curved out the black inlayed teak benches for forty years. The Baroque building complex was decorated with frescoes by Matthias Grusner lay monk and István Dorfmeister well advanced in years and wood statues by Josef Schnitzler. The cloister is the most beautiful from east. Inside the building on this side there is a library and a dining room decorated also with Grusner’s wall paintings.

In the north of the church there is the so-called barn church. The church built on the XII century foundations was converted into a fortification. During the fights in 1605 it was blown up, then after its rebuilding it was a parsonage church till the building of the Baroque church. Since 1988 it has been a theatre in the town.

The biggest public park called ’Várkert’ can be found around the cloister complex. The locally protected area consists o fan amusement park and a Baroque park which is being reconstructed now. The area of Szentgotthárd swimming pool joins Várkert.

Kálmán Széll statue is found in the smaller park in front of the Baroque monument complex. Kálmán Széll was an outstanding figure in Szentgotthárd in XIX century.

The Baroque main square of the town is Kálmán Széll Square. The Statue of the founder Béla III can be seen next to the shops and nice restaurants.

The dominant building of the aspect of the town is Mihály Vörösmarty Secondary Grammar School which started functioning as the first temporal secondary school in the county in 1895.

Rivers Rába and Lapincs can be found not far from the centre of the town. Canoeists’ departure point is Szentgotthárd in Hungary.

Walking down János Hunyadi Street from the main square we arrive at Ágoston Pável Museum. Visitors can have a look at local history and national exhibition in the museum.

There is a double roundabout in Kálmán Széll Square so we can start our visit to the town and its surroundings from here. Hársas Lake in Máriaujfalu is a much liked watering and excursion place.

Farkasfa belonging to the town is a really Őrség settlement. The station of National Meteorological Service works here.

Coming back to the double roundabout in the main square we can leave the town in two directions. Rábatótfalu or Apátistvánfalva can both give us the sight of beautiful, nature conservated areas in Vendvidék.
